Many of us just want to make it through the day. We haven’t had a chance to think about where we are going to be in 5 years time, but we can tell you where we are going to be at the end of the day – on the couch with a glass of wine!
But if we don’t think ahead, if we don’t have our eyes on a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal), then we can get stuck in the pattern of just making it to the end of the day. And the next day. And the next day. And … you get the picture. It fits the adage – the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result.
But thinking about goals, and your BHAG can be intimidating. Partially because dreaming can always be a little scary, but partially because if we name our destination, we might need to take control of the path we are taking. We might need to make decisions differently, or make different decisions.
To get you thinking in the right direction, you can approach your BHAG development in a number of ways:
1. Identify what your passion is
2. Identify who you want in your life and what role they will play
3. What sort of lifestyle do you want?
4. What sort of challenges do you seek out?
5. Who inspires you?
6. Who do you want to inspire?
That is your homework for the week – take time to look at and write the answers to these six questions.
